A fruit garden was created in May 2019 at Puliyarakonam, Thiruvananthapuram, following the Miyawaki method of afforestation. The garden was created using fast-growing, fruit-bearing plant saplings by employing techniques like dense planting, mixed planting, preparation of the seedbed using the potting mixture, and mulching, as recommended by Professor (Dr) Akira Miyawaki for afforestation.

Plant varieties like Gooseberry (Nelli), Guava (Pera), pomegranate (Maathalam), Jaamba, Mango (Maavu), Jackfruit (Plavu), Indian coffee plum (Lubika), Star Gooseberry (Arinelli), Coconut (Thengu) and Ceylon olive (Kaara) were planted here.

One unique feature we noticed was the luxuriant growth of the plants and trees, and the other was the sheer number of branches.  The papaya is usually a single-stem tree but here it developed several branches, and all of them bore fruits.  The red banana plant is known to put out fruits in 18 months.  But in this forest, we had a huge bunch of bananas in 15 months!
