In this video, M.R. Hari mentions how, in a bid to be self-reliant, he bought indigenous varieties of cows – the Vechur and the Cheruvally varieties – and goats – the Attappady black and the Thalassery variety – for both milk and manure. The cow dung and goat pellets have microbes that work on the soil and make it fertile. The sheds were built after studying the wind patterns in the region so as to harness the resources and provide the best ambience for the animals. This has ensured good health for the animals. Hari has put up a biogas plant that provides a small quantity of fuel.
